IRINA

Two Weeks Later

What to do about a man named Yannick? That is the million-dollar question.

Since that first night, he has made it his mission to discover all there is to know about me. Dinners now resemble a first date— childhood stories are swapped and likes and dislikes are disclosed.

We’ve covered everything except for the elephant in the room… who the father of my child is and why I came here in the first place. Yannick doesn’t seem to want to know and I’m too nervous to say anything. I know what I did wasn’t wrong, just a little unorthodox, so why am I embarrassed by it? It’s not like it’s unheard of. Hell, there are lawyers that have made it their specialty.

Despite all this, I wouldn’t trade these past two weeks for anything. I do get a little lonely, though, while Yannick’s at work. Without a car, I’m stuck in our cabin with nothing but a wolf-dog and old movies.

Bored out of my mind, I’ve cleaned the cabin from top to bottom. There are only five small rooms and one of them is filled with boxes because Yannick keeps buying baby stuff even when I tell him not to, so it didn’t take long. Plus, Yannick is very neat for a bachelor.

With nothing else to do, Trigger and I spend most days walking through the woods, watching as the trees prepare themselves for winter. It’s beautiful and time seems to pass by quicker when I’m out there.

At least I have the open air and woods to explore. Poor Yannick is stuck at BTP Granary, filling pallets with bags of grain three days out of the week. While it seems tedious as all get-out, I’m not mad at the end results. His arms and legs are filled with bulging muscles and his abs sport a chiseled six-pack.

He showed me the large warehouse-type building on our first outing and I could tell that he hates it. His mood changed once we pulled into the parking lot. When I asked him about it, he just shrugged and said it’s not what he’s meant to be doing.

On his off days, we spend the morning exploring Black Timber’s small roads and the businesses scattered on Main Street. Sometimes he points out different vacant family-sized houses asking my opinions on each one. I can’t help but wonder if he’s nesting, building a home for his future family. A family that I hope includes Sunshine and me.

One of those days we stopped by the clinic so I could meet Dr. Wilson and Nurse Evans to start my prenatal care. When Yannick introduced himself as the father, I have to admit it made me a little sad— but it also felt right. It’s all so confusing.

Today’s trip included a visit to the sheriff’s department. Yannick wanted to talk to Sheriff Dunning about something, so I waited in the front with one of the deputies while they were in the office. When they came out, Dunning was sporting a cocky grin while Yannick seemed oddly relieved.
